Diagnosis

Dipluridae can be destinguished from Hexathelidae and Nemesiidae by their flat caput and the elongate and widely spaced posterior median spinnerets. They furthermore differ from Hexathelidae by the abscence of cuspules on labium (if cuspules are present then only a few) and from Mecicobothriidae by the abscence of a scutum on dorsal opisthosoma.

Description

Carapace very low and hirsute. Four spinnerets; posterior median spinnerets widely spaced; posterior lateral spinnerets elongate. Maxillary serrula present and distinct. Three claws on tarsi of legs with numerous teeth on paired claws.

Systematics

The grouping into subfamilies follows Joel Hallan.[1] , Raven, R. J. (1985a), and Coyle, F. A. (1984, 1986, 1988, 1995):

Key to the subfamilies of Dipluridae

1. Superior tarsal claws of legs with a double row of teeth ..........Diplurinae
- Superior tarsal claws of legs with a single row of teeth ..........2
2. Chelicerae ventrally with two rows of conical teeth; maxillary cuspules present ..........Ischnothelinae
- Chelicerae ventrally with one row of conical teeth; maxillary cuspules absent ..........3
3. Serrula forms a small field on anterior maxillary lobe ..........Masteriinae
- Serrula forms a broad field of short denticles on anterior maxillary lobes ..........Euagrinae
